Aqua Vitae: Caipirinha

The national cocktail of Brazil, the Caipirinha, made with Cachaça, is as simple and classic as a cocktail comes. Cachaça, the most commonly distilled alcoholic beverage in Brazil, is a sugarcane derivative like rum, but unlike rum, which is made from molasses, this alcohol results from sugarcane juice that is afterwards distilled.

A killer Cachaça is the key to the perfect Caipirinha, and Leblon Cachaça ($18) is the goods. Leblon is a premium white Cachaça inspired by its namesake and place of origin, Leblon Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Their sugar cane is rested in cognac casks and blended for greater complexity and taste.

One of the beauties of Cachaça is that drink combinations are endless - but we're gonna take it nice and slow and start with this refreshingly perfect cocktail. It's sure to quench your thirst for a beverage, and heat buster.

2 oz. Leblon Cachaça
1 small lime, cut into eighth pieces
1 oz. Simple Syrup

Cut the lime into wedges. In a tin shaker, add limes, simple syrup and muddle. Fill the shaker with cracked ice and Cachaça. Shake vigorously. Serve in a rocks glass and garnish with a slice of lime.

So you might be thinking great, this muddling thing equals another tool I have to purchase. Well dear friends, Leblon is giving away free muddlers for your Caipirinha making, you just pay shipping and get to muddling!

YUM! I love caipirinhas! i was an exchange student to Brazil a few years ago and this drink is amazing! This cachaça is pretty good, it's not the best. The more potent stuff most people might not like. In Brazil they switch it up by using lots of other fruits instead of limes and it's amazing! yay!
