It's hard not to giggle when you hear the phrase "pre-poo" for the first time. It sounds vaguely like some sort of bathroom humor--and it is, kinda.

Pre-poo is gaining in popularity with hair conscious people--and for good reason.

"Pre-poo"-ing your hair can transform it in minutes a day.

What is Pre-Poo?

Simply put, pre-poo--short for pre-shampooing--simple means conditioning your hair before washing it with the more harsh shampoos. The purpose is to protect your strands from the sulfates and other ingredients in commercial products that strip moisture from hair--especially fragile curly hair.

What You Need to Buy

Nothing! Well, we take that back. Brands like TRESemmé and Living Proof are planning to introduce pre-poo products soon, but the truth is that you don't need anything different than what's already in your beauty cabinet. The easiest way to pre-poo your hair is to use a deep conditioner or a hot oil treatment made with coconut, jojoba or olive oil.

Or, if you want to get really adventurous, DIY one with Crisco--yes, that Crisco.

How to Pre-Poo

Add your conditioner, hot oil or conditioner-oil treatment to your hair about 20-30 minutes before you wash to give it time to fully saturate into your hair. Then, either wash it out with water before you shampoo, or add shampoo on top and wash out together. That's it!

And, Don't Forget

Always use a leave-in conditioner--or add a bit of regular conditioner in your hair--after your shower. This is especially important if you have dry hair, as it helps soften your hair and locks in its precious moisture.
